Miss Maxine Jordan, the adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Cossey, who reside in the northeastern part of Washington county, received the following message concerning her brother, Sgt. Walter R. Jordan, who was well known around Akron. He formerly resided with Miss Ella Baker, near DeNova, before going into the service. The telegram which was received some time ago, follows:

"I deeply regret to inform you, a corrected report just received states your brother, Sgt. Walter R. Jordan, who was previously reported missing in action, died in July, 1942, in the Philippine islands. The secretary of war asks that I express deepest sympathy in your loss and regret that unavoidable circumstances made necessary the unusual lapse of time in reporting your brother's death to you. Confirming letter will follow."
"J.A. Ulio, Adj. Gen."

In the letter that followed, it was stated that he had died of malaria, while in a Jap prison camp.

Remains Are Brought Home

The remains of the late Sergeant Walter Robert Jordan are being returned to the United States on board the U.S. Army transport Private Joseph F. Merrill, according to word received in Akron this week.

The remains of Sgt. Jordan will be interred at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebr., Wednesday morning, Oct. 26.

Sgt. Jordan was a member of the U.S. Army and served with the coast artillery unit in the Philippine Islands. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese army when the Island of Corregidor fell.

Sgt. Jordan made his home for some time with Miss Ella Baker in the DeNova community and attended High Prairie school.

Mrs. Samuel Gailey Jr., of Fort Collins, a sister, is the nearest relative.

Notes:

Was commonly called Robert Jordan. Sergeant Jordan survived the "Bataan Death March" but died a short time later.
